How to Choose the Right Pendant SizeUpdated 3 hours ago
Pendants are sized to the surface below them, not to the room. That matters for a dining table, breakfast table, kitchen island, desk, or any other defined surface.
Single pendant
Choose a pendant approximately ⅓–½ the width of the surface below it.
For a 30" round table: ⅓ = 10", ½ = 15". A pendant around 10–15" wide is a reasonable starting range.
Look at the fixture's height, shape, and visual weight too, not just its width.
Multiple pendants over an island or long surface
Size the arrangement, not each fixture on its own.
- As a rough guide, two pendants for islands up to about 7 feet, three beyond that
- Space them 24–30" apart, center to center
- Keep at least 6" in from each end of the island
- Divide the island into equal sections and center a pendant in each. Even spacing reads better than exact measurements
Also consider the surface length and width, the diameter of each fixture, and how evenly the light lands along the surface.
Hanging height
- Kitchen island: 30–36" from the countertop to the bottom of the fixture, on a standard 8-foot ceiling
- Dining table: 30–36" above the tabletop
- Higher ceilings: add about 3" for every additional foot
- Over any open walking area: at least 7 feet, 84", from the floor to the bottom of the fixture
Multiple pendants or one large fixture
Go with multiple pendants when the surface is long, when you want light spread evenly along it, or when you want visual rhythm.
A single linear fixture is often the cleaner answer over a long dining table or a narrow island.
