The right chandelier size depends on where it's going.

Sizing to the room

For a chandelier centered in a room:

Room length + room width in feet = approximate chandelier diameter in inches

For a 12' × 14' room: 12 + 14 = 26. A chandelier around 26" in diameter is a reasonable starting point.

That's a starting size, not a ceiling. Larger rooms, higher ceilings and open designs can carry more.

Sizing to the ceiling

Diameter is only half of it. For the fixture's own height, allow 2.5–3" of fixture height per foot of ceiling height.

A fixture that's the right width but too short still reads as undersized.

Quick reference

• Small room, under about 100 sq. ft.: around 20", and up to 24" if the ceiling is 9 feet or higher, or the design is open
• Medium room, about 150–300 sq. ft.: 22–32"
• Large room, 300+ sq. ft.: 32–48" and up

For large rooms, high ceilings, staircases, and statement installations, look at the fixture's visual weight and the scale of the architecture around it, not just the number.

Over a dining table

Size to the table, not the room.

Chandelier diameter = 50–75% of the table width

For a 60" wide table: 50% = 30", 75% = 45". A chandelier around 30–45" wide is a reasonable range.

One check before you order: leave at least 12" of clear table on each side of the fixture, so nobody ends up sitting underneath it.

For long rectangular tables, a linear or elongated chandelier follows the shape of the table.

Hanging height

• Over a dining table: 30–36" from the tabletop to the bottom of the fixture, on a standard 8-foot ceiling. Add about 3" for every additional foot of ceiling height.
• Over any open walking area: at least 7 feet, 84", from the floor to the bottom of the fixture. This one isn't a guideline.

Foyers and staircases

In a single-story entry, keep the bottom of the fixture at least 7 feet from the floor.

In a two-story foyer, hang it so the bottom sits level with the second-floor landing. If there's a window above the door, center the fixture in the window so it reads from the street at night.
